What are snow guards?

Snow guards are small "snow dams" that are attached to roofs to prevent large amounts of snow from sliding off and damaging property or injury people. The snow guards hold the snow on a roof which allows it to slowly melt and fall off in small amounts or evaporarte while on the roof.

Home owners with metal roofs in areas that receive more than an inch of snow can benefit from the use of snow guards. Many people with metal roofs clear their driveways of snow only to later find a pile of snow that has slid off the roof later making a pile of snow on sidewalks and driveways. This sliding snow can collapse car roofs, damage cement, and even kill humans that may be under when mini avalanches occur.

Where should snow guards be installed?

Snow guards should be installed on roofs to protect against snow and ice sliding. Recommended installation locations are above :

  • Sidewalks
  • Home entries
  • Garages / Parking areas
  • Drive throughs
  • Above lawn decorations or landscaped areas
  • Patios
  • Basically anywhere humans may go

How are snow guards installed?

Snow guards are installed by attaching them to the roof.  There are many different options for attaching them.  Some are fastened to the roof with screws, others are fastened using Sure Bond, while others clamp to the seams of metal roofing

It is recommended to find a qualified professional to install snow guards because they understand how the snow guards will affect the structural integrity of a roof, but many home owners have successfully installed snow guards by themselves.
